What to Do in Destin, Florida in January  

Wondering what to do in Destin, Florida in January? It might be too cold to swim in the Gulf and sunbathe on the beach, but there are still plenty of things to do along the Emerald Coast. With numerous indoor and outdoor activities that both kids and adults will enjoy, your favorite vacation destination is still full of entertainment options. Here’s a roundup of the hottest happenings this month. 

Listen to Live Music During 30A Songwriters Festival 

Get ready for some live tunes because this annual event features an amazing lineup of songwriters. From large outdoor stages to small, intimate cafés, performances will be held at more than 25 great venues throughout South Walton from January 17 – 20, 2020.  Headliners at this year’s  30A Songwriters Festival include John Prine, Indigo Girls, Tanya Tucker, Brian Wilson, Don McLean and more. 

Take a Walk on the Beach 

The beach is typically the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about what to do in Destin, Florida. Winter is the best time of year to take a walk by the water because the sand isn’t lined with people, beach chairs and umbrellas. Grab a jacket and go for a stroll along the coastline—it’s beautiful any time of year! 

Check out the Marine Life at Gulfarium

Located on Okaloosa Island, Gulfarium is fun for the whole family. This marine adventure park offers exhibits, shows, training demonstrations, animal encounters and more. When searching for what to do in Destin, Florida, this attraction is always at the top of the list! The off-season is a great time to visit because there are a variety of ways to save. 

Special admission prices in January include:

  • Kids Free Weekend : Free admission for kids age 12 and under on January 25 and 26, 2020. The limit is two free kids per adult and cannot be combined with any other discount or coupon. 

  • Senior Wednesdays : General admission is only $7 for seniors age 62 and up. Available during January and February 2020. 

  • Military Weekends : Military ID holders and their immediate family receive 50% off general admission every Saturday and Sunday through February 2020. This offer cannot be combined with any additional coupon or discount.

Join the Destin Snowbird Club

Wondering what to do in Destin as a snowbird? The Destin Snowbirds Club meets weekly at the Destin Community Center and hosts a variety of activities and events. Events this month include the Thank Goodness it’s Tuesday (T.G.I.T.) parties on January 14 & 28 at Seascape Conference Center and a harbor cruise on January 27. In addition, there are a variety of activities such as computer club, billiards at Hurricane Lanes, pickle ball and more. It’s a great way to meet follow snowbirds who have flocked down to Destin, Florida in January. 

Sample, Sip and Paint at Whole Foods 

Whole Foods in the Destin Commons offers much more than just groceries. This local hotspot hosts several weekly events, where you can sip, snack and socialize! Mark your calendar for these upcoming events: 

  • 5 After 5 : Enjoy four beer or wine samples, a food sample and live music for $7 from 5pm – 8pm on the patio every Friday night. 

  • Sips n Strokes : On January 7 and 21, sip on a glass of wine while a Whole Foods Market team member guides you through a painting exercise. The $15 admission fee includes a canvas, paint, paintbrush and a glass of wine.  

  • Flight Night : Every Wednesday in January, enjoy three tastings of wine or four tastings of beer for $5. 

Get a Workout in at Destin Community Center

If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to work out more, there are several classes being offered at the Destin Community Center. It’s a great way to burn some calories while also meeting other people in the community. 

  • Chair Yoga : During Chair Yoga , you will perform traditional yoga poses from a chair for lower impact.  Offered every Thursday from 10am to 11am, Chair Yoga costs $4 and is open to everyone. 

  • Step and Sweat : Offered on January 29 from 9am to 10am, Step and Sweat is a cardio workout that includes aerobics using an elevated platform with both easy and intermediate levels of choreography. The cost is $5 and the class is open to all ages and fitness levels. 

Warm Up with a Beach Bonfire at Royal Palm Grille

Get nice and toasty with a beach bonfire! Every Friday and Monday at sunset, Royal Palm Grille hosts a free bonfire at their Beach Bar. It’s free to attend and park—everyone is welcome! S’mores, drink specials and their full menu will be available. 

Show Off Your Trivia Skills at World of Beer 

Gather up your friends and brush up on random facts, then head over to World of Beer in Destin Commons for a chance to win a variety of prizes. This live trivia game is free to play and is hosted every Wednesday from 7pm to 9pm.

Trivia prizes include: 

  • 1 st Place: $50 World of Beer Gift Card

  • 2 nd Place: $30 World of Beer Gift Card
