Where is the Emerald Coast?

The Emerald Coast of Florida spans roughly 100 miles, stretching from Panama City Beach to Destin, FL. Between these two destinations, you’ll find the charming coastal communities of 30A along the way. The coast is named for its characteristic emerald tint to its waters, which is caused by a rich phytoplankton population.

How to Get to the Emerald Coast of Florida:

Of course, there’s more than one way to get to the Emerald Coast. It depends on where you’re coming from! If you’re within driving distance, that’s easy. Hop in the car and go!

If you don't live within a comfortable driving distance (or just don't want to do the driving yourself), don't worry! There are several airports on the Emerald Coast to choose from. These are the closest Emerald Coast airports:

Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS)

  • Airlines: American, Delta, Southwest, Allegiant
  • Best For: Destin, Fort Walton Beach, Okaloosa Island, Navarre
  • Notes: Located on Eglin Air Force Base; small but efficient with quick access to major beach towns.

Pensacola International Airport (PNS)

  • Airlines: American, Delta, Southwest, United, Spirit, Frontier, Silver
  • Best For: Pensacola Beach, Navarre Beach, Gulf Breeze
  • Notes: Larger than VPS with more direct flights; located about 45 minutes west of Navarre Beach.

Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP)

  • Airlines: American, Delta, Southwest, United
  • Best For: Panama City Beach, Rosemary Beach, 30A, Inlet Beach
  • Notes: Clean, modern airport serving the eastern end of the Emerald Coast; growing with more seasonal routes.

Things to Do on the Emerald Coast

So, once you’ve reached the Emerald Coast…what’s next? Luckily, there are plenty of exciting activities and events to explore. Here are just some of our favorite things to do on the Emerald Coast:

Emerald Coast Beaches

One of the best parts (maybe the best part) of visiting the Emerald Coast is spending time on its sugar-white sand beaches and swimming in the clear, emerald waters of the Gulf of Mexico. But which beach should you visit? Well, here are just a few of our favorites.

James Lee Park (Destin)

James Lee Park is at the top of our list for family-friendly beaches on the Emerald Coast. There’s a big playground for the kids, covered picnic tables for shade, and the Crab Trap restaurant is right on the beach if you get hungry.

Crystal Beach (Destin)

This beach is small but charming, surrounded by cute beach houses and close to Destin Commons. It’s great if you want to be near the action but still enjoy a relaxing beach day. Plus, the water here is usually calm—ideal for floating or paddleboarding.

Pensacola Beach (Pensacola)

Pensacola Beach brings a little bit of everything—lively boardwalks, restaurants, a long fishing pier, and wide stretches of soft sand. You can go where the crowd is or find quieter spots like Opal Beach, just a short drive away. It’s a fun beach day, no matter what you’re in the mood for!

Wayside Park (Fort Walton Beach)

This beach has everything you need for a fun and easy beach day—tons of parking, restrooms, showers, and even a big boardwalk that makes getting to the sand a breeze. It’s a great pick if you’re staying near Okaloosa Island!

John C. Beasley Park (Fort Walton Beach)

Looking for a beach with a little more space to spread out? Beasley Park is a great option. It’s got shaded picnic spots, clean restrooms, and lifeguards on duty. It’s perfect for a full beach day with the whole crew!

Henderson Beach State Park (Destin)

This is one of the prettiest and most peaceful beaches around. It’s a state park, so there’s a small entrance fee, but the calm atmosphere and natural beauty are totally worth it. You’ll find nature trails, picnic areas, and a beach that feels far away from the hustle of town, even though it’s right in Destin.

Bonus Beaches Worth the Trip:

  • Grayton Beach State Park (30A): Quiet, scenic, and surrounded by nature—this is a beach lover’s dream if you want to get off the beaten path.
  • Blue Mountain Beach (30A): A low-key, peaceful beach that’s perfect if you’re looking to relax and avoid the crowds.
  • Navarre Beach: Sometimes called “Florida’s most relaxing place,” this is a great option if you want to slow down and just enjoy the view.
