Embrace the Leave No Trace Initiative

Welcome to Walton County! As you enjoy our stunning beaches and natural landscapes, we invite you to join us in preserving the area's pristine beauty through the Leave No Trace initiative. This international program is designed to minimize environmental impacts and ensure our beaches remain clean and safe for everyone, including local wildlife.

What is Leave No Trace?

Leave No Trace is a globally recognized program that educates and encourages outdoor enthusiasts to reduce their environmental footprint. In Walton County, this initiative is supported by the Walton County Municipal Code, which requires the removal of personal items from the beach each night. Any items left unattended between one hour after dusk and one hour after sunrise are considered abandoned and will be removed to maintain the cleanliness and safety of our beaches.

Why is This Important?

Implementing the Leave No Trace ordinance serves several crucial purposes:

  • Emergency Access: Keeping the beaches clear at night allows emergency vehicles to navigate more safely and efficiently year-round.

  • Wildlife Protection: Obstacles on the beach can hinder wildlife, such as sea turtles during their nesting season from May to November. By removing personal items, we provide a safer environment for these creatures.

Your Role as a Guest

As a valued guest in our community, you can contribute to the success of the Leave No Trace initiative by:

  • Removing Personal Items: Ensure all your belongings, including chairs, umbrellas, and beach toys, are taken off the beach by one hour after dusk.
  • Proper Disposal: Dispose of all trash and recyclables in designated receptacles to prevent littering and protect marine life.
  • Respecting Wildlife: Observe local wildlife from a distance and avoid disturbing their natural habitats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I retrieve items that have been removed?
No, according to Walton County Municipal Code Section 22-54(g)(3), any personal property left on the beach during restricted hours is deemed abandoned and becomes the property of the county, which may dispose of the item accordingly.

Where can I store my items if I own or rent beachfront property?
Personal items may be placed in a neat bundle at the toe of the dune on your property.

Are there permits available for larger items or structures?
Yes, permits can be obtained for permanent structures and large items such as sailboats. These requests are reviewed to ensure they do not impact sea turtle nesting or violate any state or federal regulations. For more information, contact Code Compliance at (850) 622-0000.
