Camera
Sunscreen
Bug Spray
Comfort items
Medicine if needed

Although it is unlikely that your stuff will get wet, anything could happen so bring a dry bag for those items you want to protect..

Angela Duckworth Talk: Grit @ Seaside Assembly Hall on 3/24 at 4:30pm

Come hear Angela Duckworth speak on Grit at Seaside Assembly Hall on Thursday, March 24 at 4:30pm. Complimentary and open to the public. The Assembly Hall is located on Smolian Cir. across the Lyceum Lawn from the Seaside Neighborhood School.

The Seaside Institute is proud to present pioneering psychologist — and recipient of the prestigious MacArthur Foundation “genius grant” — Angela Duckworth to speak about her theory of Grit as a key predictor of success.

Sharing new insights from her landmark research and forthcoming book, Duckworth’s presentation on Grit — the tendency to pursue long-term goals with perseverance and passion — is complimentary and open to the public next Thursday at the Seaside Assembly Hall.

Duckworth will demonstrate how discipline, willingness to defer gratification, and drive are crucial to achieving a successful life, and what separates “gritty” individuals from others. Using examples from the National Spelling Bee, West Point, Chicago Public Schools and more, Duckworth demonstrates how her studies have shown Grit is the most reliable predictor of performance and success. Her presentation concludes with a summary of her own insights on how to develop Grit.

The Amy Black Band LIVE at The Seaside REP Theatre on 3/24 at 7:30pm

A Muscle Shoals Music Revue with The Amy Black Band LIVE@TheREP on Thursday, Mar. 24 at 7:30pm. Tickets $25 and available at LoveTheREP.com.

“The album finds Black offering terrific versions of some of the vintage soul and R&B numbers recorded in Muscle Shoals.” Philadephia Inquirer
Amy Black’s third solo release, “The Muscle Shoals Sessions” (June 2015) was recorded at historic FAME studios in her family’s homeland of Muscle Shoals, AL and features Spooner Oldham, the McCrary Sisters and Will Kimbrough. The result was, “a blend of sultry desire, ardent passion…a sound that’s both tough and tender” (Relix). “To showcase her true potential as a bluesy, R&B heavy hitter, Amy Black had to go home. Black’s soulful chops shine.” (Elmore)

For Amy Black, Muscle Shoals, Alabama, has always held a special magic. Her parents were born there, and some of her fondest memories were made during frequent visits to both sets of grandparents. She spent so much time in “the Shoals,” it felt more like home than many of the places she’d actually lived. She even knew the local hangouts and town lore. Or thought she did.

Black remembers passing FAME Studios often; it was right on the main drag. But she had no awareness then of its musical history or impact, much less any inkling that she’d wind up making music her career. Little could she know that one day, a session with the legendary Muscle Shoals keyboardist Spooner Oldham would launch her on a journey of discovery that would give her an even deeper connection with a place she loves. After Oldham, one of Muscle Shoals’ original “Swampers” session players, was serendipitously invited to perform on her 2013 EP The Muscle Shoals Session, her interest in the sound and its story was awakened. She fell so in love — and felt so at home — with the sweet soul music he’d helped craft decades before, she expanded the EP into an entire album of Shoals classics and seamlessly blended originals.

Recording the album at FAME, Black never fails to nail the spot where gospel, blues and R&B collide — and transform into soul. Blues in Britain wrote, “Black Is blessed with a deeply soulful voice that melds elements of Dusty Springfield, Mavis Staples and Alberta Hunter.” Inspired by Etta James, Wilson Pickett, Aretha Franklin, Mavis Staples and so many others who recorded some of modern music’s most iconic songs in this little Alabama hamlet, Black’s project pays homage to magic made at both FAME and Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, as well as to her beloved grandparents, and the cherished memories she carries of childhood sojourns.

Historical Tour: Coffeen Nature Preserve
Guide: Susan Paladini

Mar 9, Mar 26, Apr 30, May 4, May 28

9:30am – 11:30am | Fee: $20

Explore the Coffeen Nature Preserve and its history of World War II missile testing. The 220-acre Nature Preserve is owned by the Coffeen Land Trust, a local environmental non-profit organization dedicated to preserving it “as a place of peace and quiet and a haven for all God’s creatures.” Its history however is far from quiet. It was used as a secret missile test site by the Army Air Force during World War II. Hundreds of JB-2 “Buzz Bombs,” (the first pilotless, jet propelled missiles), were launched from the dunes into the Gulf of Mexico.

Join Susan Paladini, the Resident Manager, and explore the site where America’s strategic missile program began. You will view the original military photographs inside the “mess hall” and learn about the generous gift of the founder, the late Dorothy Coffeen.

This will be followed by a hike of approximately 1½ miles around the property, which will include walking along two original missile launch ramps, stepping down into concrete launch bunkers and viewing other military buildings. Enjoy the natural beauty of the Preserve and Fuller Lake. This is the most western of Walton County’s globally rare and imperiled coastal dune lakes.

Participants are encouraged to wear a hat, sunscreen and insect repellant and to bring bottled water. Closed-toed or other suitable walking shoes are a must.

Space is limited to 16 participants. No minimum.

Location: Coffeen Nature Preserve, Santa Rosa Beach

Fee: $20

Eco-adventure tour schedule and descriptions are available online at www.basinalliance.org. Tour prices vary, starting at $15. Registration is by phone at 850-200-4160.
