Hydrobike Ride & Dine at Red Bar on 4/6 between 8am – 12pm

11

Sign up for a Wednesday Morning Red Bar Ride and Dine – available weekly, year round.

Meet the group at the Western Lake boat ramp at the end of Hotz Avenue just past the world famous Red Bar in Grayton Beach between 7:30 and 8:00. You will enjoy 4 hours of Hydrobike play time in the Gulf of Mexico or in Western Lake. You will be provided lunch at the Red Bar via a $25 gift card so you can dine at your convenience. They open at 11 am.

Grayton Beach is unique in that it has a beach bordering the Gulf of Mexico and Western Lake. Western Lake is one of South Walton’s Coastal Dune lakes. These lakes only exist in a few places in the whole world and Walton County is lucky enough to be home to several of them. At times the outflow will bust open and flow right out into the Gulf of Mexico. 4 hours give you plenty of time to explore both bodies of water.

*Please note that riding in the Gulf may be restricted based on current water conditions.
All activities are subject to weather conditions.

The Stinky Cheese Man
Though the characters may be familiar, each of your favorite storybook fables is uproariously derailed in this adaptation of Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith’s quintessential children’s book of fractured fairy tales. Everything from “Chicken Little” to “The Gingerbread Man” gets a complete makeover. Fun music and witty narration accompany the likes of ineloquent giants, sassy barnyard animals, colossal cow pies, and enough stinky cheese to go around.

Shelves to the Shore at Coastal Branch Library on 4/7 at 4pm

From Shelves to the Shores is a new program coming to local libraries for children to learn about local waters and habitats.

The Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance (CBA) alongside NWF Environmental Stewards will kick off their “From Shelves to the Shores” Program with three community libraries-Niceville Public Library, Destin Library and the Coastal Branch Library in South Walton.

Over the next three months, CBA will host activities every other week at these libraries for children aged 4-12. The children will participate in array of activities that range from growing a native, shoreline grass to observing live animals to creating their very own oyster.

“This year we are expanding our program to include three community libraries,” said CBA’s Education Coordinator Brittany Tate, “We hope this program encourages children to fall in love with our local waters through fun, hands-on education.”

The project is free and open to the public. Children are encouraged to come to their closest library to learn something new about the Choctawhatchee Bay and the local environment.

The free meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. with a 30-minute silent meditation at Christ the King Episcopal Church. The Society is ecumenical and does not follow any religion.

Hartman and Anderson invite the audience to go on “a mindful foray into the amazing world of healing with plants,” says Hartman. If you struggle with your garden, she will present “a lively discussion on earthing, no-work gardening, and how to find balance in our man-altered environments.”

Anderson will “cultivate your relationship with the useful plants in your landscape, allowing you to utilize their edible and medicinal properties,” says Hartman.

Anderson is a 200-hours registered yoga instructor, and community herbalist. She organizes community events to foster personal growth and is the owner of Fera Wellness, a holistic consulting business.

Hartman calls herself “a forager, permaculture designer, and beginning community herbalist.” She and her husband, Eric Marcus, own Wild Root Plants & Sundries, at 707 R. Jackson Blvd., Panama City Beach, featuring unusual plants, food, and handmade goods inspired by nature. She says she is in transition, heading toward providing advice on lifestyle, herbalism and more.

She moved from Frederick, Md., to NW Florida in 1996. She holds an A.A.S. degree in Architectural Design and Drafting from Frederick Community College, and now has her own firm, CFH Design Studio. She has designed more than 200 homes, many of them small and many incorporating energy- and water-saving features. In 2009, she completed her B.A. in sustainable community development from Prescott College in Prescott, AZ.

She is the proprietor of Moonlight Micro-Farm, a seed business dedicated to preserving our heritage of heirloom and non-GMO seeds. Hartman is currently enrolled in the East West School of Planetary Herbology in California, studying the combined healing systems of Ayurvedic, traditional Chinese medicine, and Western herbalism. She lives in Panama City Beach with her husband and daughter, Jordan, two rescue dogs and a cat.

The ECMS meets on the first and third Thursday every month except July and August. Anyone who needs meditation instruction should arrive by 6:15 p.m. For more info, contact Nancy James at nancyjames@embarqmail.com.

Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation (MKAF) is calling all dancing queens (and kings) to kick up their heels in support of a great cause this spring. In partnership with Ocean Reef Vacation Rentals & Real Estate, Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation kicks off its 21st season with a special performance by critically acclaimed ABBAFAB, a talented, high-energy tribute band for the Swedish pop group sensation, ABBA. http://abbafab.com/.
The concert is set for Saturday, April 9 at 7 p.m. in the Dugas Pavilion located in the Mattie Kelly Cultural Arts Village, located at 4323 Commons Drive West in Destin.

Making its Northwest Florida debut, ABBAFAB will present a high-energy two-hour, multi-media tribute performance that includes ABBA’s popular chart-topping hits from the ‘70s and ‘80s such as “Mama Mia,” “Dancing Queen, “SOS,” “Waterloo,” “Honey Honey,” Fernando” among others. Core band members: Anne Davies, Chelsea Faulds, Nick Davies and Scotty Pearson have traveled the globe earning praise and accolades for their “intoxicating” talent and spot-on ABBA performance. In addition to many memorable ABBA hits, this “Technicolor journey” features choreographed dancing, colorful costumes and plenty of audience participation.

“There’s really nothing like it,” says ABBAFAB singer Anne Davies who formed the band in 2008. “We’ve had audiences from ages 5 to 95 and they all get into dancing and singing. This music is so upbeat and uplifting … who doesn’t like to feel happy?”

ABBA was a Scandinavian sensation nearly from the start. The four-member Swedish band from Stockholm skyrocketed up the music charts with their hit “Waterloo” in 1974 and continued to dominate the charts with catchy, dance hits until 1982. One of the most commercially successful acts in the history of popular music, ABBA was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2010. With the staging of the Broadway hit “Mama Mia” later made into a star-studded film starring Meryl Streep, ABBA’s intoxicating music danced into the hearts and heels of yet another generation.

Other signature events slated for MKAF’s 2016 season will include the 21st Annual Concerts in the Village, 8th Annual Labor Day Weekend Concert (Sept. 4); the 21st Annual Festival of the Arts (Oct. 29-30) and the 21st Annual holiday offering Sounds of the Season (Dec. 2) at Village Baptist Church in Destin.

Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation (MKAF), a 501-c-3 not-for-profit charitable arts organization, was founded in 1995 on the cultural, educational and spiritual beliefs of the late Destin Matriarch, Mattie Kelly. The champion of cultural arts and education in Northwest Florida, MKAF’s vision is to impact lives through art and culture.

Sinfonia Presents The Hot Sardines at Emerald Coast Convention Center on 4/9 at 7:30pm

41371436049853

Let the good times roll with Sinfonia and The Hot Sardines at the Emerald Coast Convention Center on Saturday, April 9 at 7:30 pm. A good time will be had by all in this high-energy season finale! Laissez le bon temps rouler! Table seating only for this performance.

The Hot Sardines’ high-energy music making and swinging’ style pair nicely with Sinfonia’s orchestra for an incredible season finale! You will love this new take on New Orleans Jazz!
The Emerald Coast Convention Center on Okaloosa Island will be transformed to a candle-lit jazz club for Saturday’s performance.

All tickets are $35 and will be configured as tables to add to the jazz club vibe. Tickets may be purchased online at www.SinfoniaGulfCoast.org or by calling the box office at 850-460-8800.

Take a blustery brass lineup, layer it over a rhythm section that includes a tap dancer, led by an upright stride-piano virtuoso and tie it all together with a vocal-front woman with a voice from a by-gone era. The Sardine sound is steeped in hot jazz, salty stride piano and the kind of music reminiscent of wartime Paris via New Orleans. In the style of music that Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt and Waller used to make. Straight-up, foot stomping jazz.

Sinfonia Gulf Coast was founded in 2005 on Florida’s Northwest Gulf Coast with the mission of redefining the symphony experience. Under the guidance of Music Director and Founder Demetrius Fuller and a dedicated board of directors, the nonprofit orchestra is in its tenth season of innovative musical programming, designed to entertain, educate and inspire the community.

For more information on Sinfonia Gulf Coast’s 10th season concerts and events or to purchase tickets, please visit www.SinfoniaGulfCoast.org, call (850) 269-7229 or e-mail info@sinfoniagulfcoast.org.

Historical Tour: Coffeen Nature Preserve on 4/13 between 9:30am – 11:30am

coffeennaturepreservesm

Explore the Coffeen Nature Preserve and its history of World War II missile testing. The 220-acre Nature Preserve is owned by the Coffeen Land Trust, a local environmental non-profit organization dedicated to preserving it “as a place of peace and quiet and a haven for all God’s creatures.” Its history, however, is far from quiet. It was used as a secret missile test site by the Army Air Force during World War II. Hundreds of JB-2 ‘Buzz Bombs’ (the first pilotless, jet propelled missiles), were launched from the dunes into the Gulf of Mexico.

Wyland-World'sLargestPaintedFlag2016_0

Internationally famous artist Wyland will be in Destin to complete what will be the world’s largest painted American flag mural, an impressive 3.8-acres in size, on the roof of Legendry Marina, the world’s largest single indoor marine building. The awe-inspiring 555’ x 229’ flag honors the United States military armed forces who defend our country and first responders who watch over and protect our communities.

The public is invited to attend the American Flag mural dedication at Legendary Marina on Wednesday, April 13, at 3 p.m.

Ceremonies will include the Eglin AFB honor guard presentation of the colors, a military aerial demonstration, the National Anthem sung by Sr. Airman 1st Class Christine David – one of thirty-seven Airmen selected to sing in the Tops in Blue global tour, invocation by Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, God Bless America sung by hit TV show The Voice finalist Geoff McBride, and a closing prayer to honor the military and first responders by Destiny Worship Center pastor Steve Vaggalis.

The master of ceremonies will be retired firefighter and 2009 Florida Firefighter of the Year Shayne Stewart. Keynote speakers will be the renowned environmental artist Wyland, Lt. Col. Christine Mau – the first female F-35 Air Force fighter pilot, and Bobby Dove – the military’s most wounded veteran to survive and now highly active with the Special Ops Wounded Warriors foundation.

Guests can watch Wyland’s finishing touches to the painted flag in streaming live via a large jumbotron video screen at ground level.

Legendary Marina is located at the foot of the Mid-Bay Bridge in Destin, Florida. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early for dedication ceremonies which start at 3 p.m. on April 13.
